SUNSET BEACH WEATHER
May 1, 2024 is the start of the Sunset Beach sea turtle nesting season!
Sunset Beach Tide Chart
ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS:
  1. Don't walk alone!
  2. Let team members know if you are unable to walk. If you cannot walk on your scheduled day, ask someone on the team to cover for you. If you can't get someone please contact your Captain or Carmel.
  3. Finish your walk by 7:00 a.m.
  4. DO NOT walk if there is lightening. Try to walk later if weather permits.
  5. Contact your captain with the status from your walk, crawl or no crawl.
  6. On the way to the jetty, walk close to the high tide line, but on windy days walk closer to the dunes. On the way back walk by the water.
  7. If there is a crawl call Carmel cell 910-209-1079 or Darlene 910-207-1032. No one is to start digging until Carmel or myself get there. We will be there to help ASAP.
  8. At least 1 person should stay at the crawl and the others finish their walk.
  9. For every crawl start an "individual crawl record" form which can be found on the web site.
  10. At least 2 people on each team should have the following items in their backpack: plastic marking tape (Carmel has some if you need it), a sharpie marker, measuring tape, a small note pad, a mallot, canvas bag (in case we have to move the eggs), disposable gloves, and of course a cell phone.
  11. Wooden stakes to mark the nest will be stored next to the Bird Island sign and at the Mail Box. Stakes for East and Central will be brought to the sight by Captain or Carmel.
  12. Put tape around all 4 stakes at the bottom so we can monitor the sand build up when we check the nest, date on back of stake, going down, (use current year such as 050121), Blue masking tape should be put on the front stake on confirmed nests.
  13. Don't forget to take plastic bags with you to pick up trash.
  14. Each week send an email or call your captain to provide your captain with a count of how many bags of trash you pick up each week.

Volunteer Hour Tracking and Registration Guides

We use a tracking service called Track It Forward (located in your APP Store) for volunteers to log hours, see their previous hour entries, update their contact information, and view and register for trainings. All volunteers will need to create a Track It Forward account the first time you access these services. Below are how-to-guides to get you started.
Click HERE to submit your Volunteer Hours. Record your time spent working on weekly walking along with any other participating projects such as the market, programs, etc.).

Want the APP to track hours from your phone?

"Track It Forward" offers an APP for your phone to make it easy to log hours. You can download the APP from your APP Store and use your phone's browser to go to "Enter Hours" page and from the browser's menu "add to home screen" for a quick link on your phone.
